Fixer IN Nepal

What We Learned Being a Film Fixer in Nepal

The work of a film fixer usually goes unnoticed on air or in print. However, the contribution of film fixers especially in difficult environments is priceless. Nepal is a country without a lot of international recognition for filming and being a film fixer in nepal is a challenging job. And as it is still a developing country, lots of things might be difficult, like having to wait for ages to get the permits processed (not literally), or arranging the best transportation services as the roads are whack. That’s where fixers come in. To put it on a single definition, fixers normally arrange visas and permits, interviews, hotels, flights and domestic transportation — more like a production manager’s job. In over years of providing quality fixing services in Nepal, we have been through lots of ups and downs. Yet, we are sailing on the same boat, reaching greater heights. Through the hardships of fixing over the years, we may have stumbled but we have gotten up stronger with valuable lessons.

Care for perfection

As a film fixer, it is indeed very important to notice the small details that most people forget about. We pay attention to intricate details in every work we do. We strive for perfection and have established ourselves as one of the best fixing companies in Nepal. We have gone through # years of providing fixing services and what we have learned in each project that we take up is that everything has to be perfect. Scouting the location, doing research, managing equipment and transportation and everything else has to be according to the liking of the client.

Quick decision making

A fixer may have to face new challenges on each project. To be prepared for this, he has to have quick decision making capabilities. But then, only making the decisions isn’t everything, it should be able to solve the problems effectively. If something isn’t right in the filming process and or back-up plans have failed, we have to act fast on the scene. There’s no space for failure in our work and we make the best out of any situations ahead of us.

New challenges in every project

What’s so intriguing about fixing for filming in Nepal is that the knowledge of one project can’t be applied on another. There are new challenges with every new project. The general challenge in each project has to be dealing with the local people. Again, while the problem is same for each project, the measures adopted to solve them varies significantly. We may have to deal with old people in one shoot and children in the other, Newari people in one shoot and Kirati people in the other. Convincing them about the shoot in their local area is a challenges as people have different  mentalities according to their culture as well as the location.

Have basic knowledge of everything

A fixer’s main job to to fix all the problems. And that’s it. To be able to fix problems of all sort, a fixer needs to have the basic knowledge of everything. If a car stops out of the blue, he has to know how to get it running again. If an equipment fails, he has to know how to get it working again, or where to get a replacement in a short notice. If someone in the crew is injured, he has to be able to provide basic first-aid. They are called fixers for a reason.

Representative of the country

International filmmakers trust the local fixers for their project. In a way, that fixer is being a representative of our country in front of some other country. A fixer has to be careful in what he does, or he might end up spreading false reputation about the country because of his mistakes. We sure don’t want our little mistakes to be how our country is represented internationally.

Provide support

Filming can be a stressful work. Sometimes, the clients may feel like nothing is working out properly or how they are failing with the project. But that may not be the case in real. Filming in Nepal itself is challenging due to extreme topology, unexpected weather conditions and political instability. That doesn’t mean the project won’t be successful. At times like this, the fixer has to be the motivational force for the client. He has to support the client and remind them why they came to Nepal to film the project in the first place. It is well known that knowledge has no limitation. Filming on different topics and environment does not allow us to apply the same tactics and knowledge we gained fixing other projects. However, we aim to provide the best fixing services in Nepal and all the services you require for filming your project.
