Foreign crews often ask whether they can just fly in with their cameras. For professional shoots the answer is no: film equipment goes through customs as part of an authorised production. This guide explains how it works, so you can plan before you ship. Fixer In Nepal prepares the equipment paperwork alongside the filming permit. Our film permit service and guide to film production in Nepal cover the wider process.
Can I bring my camera and film equipment into Nepal?
Yes, but professional film equipment is cleared as part of an authorised production. Get the filming permit first. Then the equipment is brought in under temporary import arrangements tied to that permit, with a full equipment list. It cannot simply be cleared by a crew member on arrival without that paperwork.
What comes first: the permit or the equipment?
The permit comes first. The equipment import is arranged around the approved production, and the Film Development Board, Nepal, is involved in the recommendation letters used for temporary equipment import. Our guide to the film permit for Everest and Nepal national parks shows how the permit application itself works.
Do I need an ATA Carnet for film gear in Nepal?
Do not assume a carnet will be accepted. Nepal was not part of the ATA Carnet system when it was last discussed publicly, and we have not seen official confirmation that this has changed. Ask your fixer to confirm the current rule with Nepal Customs before you ship anything. Fixer In Nepal does this check for each production.
What documents does customs need for film equipment?
An equipment list with make, model, quantity and serial numbers, declared values and ownership, insurance details, shipping or flight details, and the production documents behind the permit. The list you declare on entry is the list checked on the way out.
- Make, model, quantity and serial number for every item.
- Declared value and who owns each item.
- Insurance details for the equipment.
- Flight, freight or courier details.
- The production documents that support your filming permit.
How does the gear travel: crew baggage, freight or courier?
All three are used. Small kits often travel as crew baggage. Larger kits may go as air freight or courier shipments, and can arrive separately from the crew. Tell your fixer which route you plan early, because freight and courier shipments need their own customs paperwork.
What happens to the equipment when we leave Nepal?
Everything declared on entry must leave again, and customs reconciles the gear item by item against the original list. Anything declared but missing on departure can become a customs matter with duty and taxes. Consumables such as batteries, media and gels should be declared separately.
Do I have to bring everything, or can I rent in Nepal?
Many productions bring cameras and lenses and rent lighting, grip and support gear locally through our film equipment rental in Nepal, which reduces what has to be declared and re-exported. Ask us what is available for your dates. You can also see our past projects and answers to common questions.
